Ptarmigan near Savage River

Ptarmigan near Savage River

Location: Denali National Park, Alaska
Date: 30 August 2002
Camera: Pentax ZX-50
Random fact: the Alaska state bird. The ptarmigan were just starting to turn white for the winter -- you can see some white feathers around this one's feet. There was a whole flock of them that seemed to always be hanging out near the Savage River picnic area. After seeing them for several days I decided I might as well grab at least one photo, and this fellow obliged me by posing on a rock.
